Took longer than I thought! 4 hours in total with a couple of short stops. Walked one way: Howtown to Glenridding then steamer back to Pooley Bridge. Some steep-ish sections.. difficult to do quickly given all of the tree routes/uneven surfaces. Lots of shade along the way for dogs. Great views!. Heughscar & the Cockpit from Pooley Bridge Looking Down Toward Roehead The wild, untamed landscape of Moor Divot above Pooley Bridge was, in ancient times, home to settlers who went to great lengths to create stone monuments. Today, the remains of those monuments can be found amongst the heathland, and this route takes you to the largest, The Cockpit stone circle, before heading to the low.

Howtown to Pooley Bridge. Distance: 5 miles / 8km . Terrain: Undulating walk through farm land and open fell. Please take care: there is a 500m section on the road from Cross Dormont to Waterside House.. This walk has it all and makes for a magical day, taking a ride on the old steamer across the length of the beautiful Ullswater Lake, then returning on foot with views which some describe as the best in the country. Your journey begins at Glenridding Pier, where you board the vintage steamer travelling across the blue waters to Howtown, then on.
